The certifications run in a set order, each adding technical depth and widening the specialisations open to you.

DP-900: Azure Data Fundamentals

DP-900 covers the basics of data on Azure: core data workloads, analytics, and Azure data services. It introduces relational and non-relational data along with the basic architecture of the Azure data platform.

Difficulty Level: Beginner
Typical Prep Time: 4-6 weeks for newcomers to Azure
Exam Format: 40-60 questions, multiple choice and scenario-based
How It Builds: Provides the base knowledge for every Azure data role

DP-203: Azure Data Engineer Associate (retired 31 March 2025)

DP-203 was the core Azure Data Engineer certification. It covered data storage design, data processing, data security, and monitoring and optimisation, with Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Stream Analytics, and data pipeline architecture at its centre.

Job Market Demand

Microsoft's large base of commercial customers keeps demand for Azure Data Engineers steady across industries.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in computer and information technology occupations to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035. Microsoft's investment in Azure data services, including the Fabric platform, adds further specialisations.

Remote Work Opportunities

Data engineering is cloud-based work, so it can be done from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Many organisations now offer fully remote or hybrid arrangements for these positions.

Companies Actively Hiring for This Role

Large consulting firms (Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG) recruit Azure Data Engineers regularly. Technology companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Google, IBM) hire for both customer-facing and internal data engineering roles, and Fortune 500 companies in every industry hire them for modernisation projects.

How Long Does It Take?

Realistic Timeline from Beginner to Certified

Complete Beginner to DP-700 Certified: timeline varies with Fabric experience
- DP-900 preparation: 4-6 weeks
- Hands-on practice: 8-12 weeks
- Additional practice and review: 4-6 weeks

DP-700 to DP-600 Certified: timeline varies
- Fabric learning curve: 4-6 weeks
- DP-600 preparation: 6-8 weeks
- Practice and review: 2-3 weeks

Full-time vs Part-time Study Schedules

Full-time Study (40+ hours/week): The full path takes 4-6 months, with most of the time spent on hands-on practice and labs.

Part-time Study (10-15 hours/week): Plan for 8-12 months, spread across evenings and weekends with some practice every day.

Working Professional (5-8 hours/week): Expect 12-18 months for the full path. Take one certification at a time and allow long stretches of hands-on practice.

When to Take Each Cert

Leave time between certifications. Take DP-900 first, then spend 2-3 months building practical experience before attempting DP-700 (DP-203's replacement). After DP-700, get some real-world experience with Azure data services before starting DP-600.

Experience gained between exams makes each later exam easier.

Practice Test Strategy

Practice tests show your gaps and get you used to the exam formats. azureprep.com has free practice questions across Azure certifications, including DP-900, DP-700, and DP-600 question banks.

Take a first practice test early to find weak areas, then keep testing through your study period to track progress. Read the explanations for questions you got right as well as those you got wrong.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Hands-on Practice: Reading documentation without building anything leads to failed exams. Spend at least 40% of your study time on hands-on labs and projects.

Memorising Without Understanding: Azure exams test practical application. Learn what each service can do and when to use it, rather than memorising feature lists.

Rushing Between Certifications: Each certification assumes practical experience, so leave time to apply what you learnt before the next exam.

Ignoring Cost Optimisation: Azure cost management comes up in several data engineering exam objectives. Learn the pricing models and cost-saving options for each service.

Tips Specific to This Career Path

Spend extra time on pipeline design patterns and troubleshooting scenarios. DP-700 and DP-600 both weight practical problem-solving above theory.

Practise designing end-to-end solutions that use several Azure services. Exam scenarios often ask you to choose the right combination of services for a set of requirements.

Study data security and compliance in depth. These topics appear in every Azure data engineering certification and matter in day-to-day work.

FAQ

Is DP-900 required before DP-600?

Microsoft does not require DP-900 before DP-600, but DP-600 assumes you know the data concepts DP-900 covers. DP-203 is retired (31 March 2025). With existing data experience you can go straight to DP-700 or DP-600; beginners get a lot out of DP-900 first.

How hard is the Data Engineer certification path?

For technology professionals with some data or cloud experience, the path is moderately difficult. DP-900 is an accessible starting point, while DP-700 needs substantial hands-on practice with Microsoft Fabric. DP-600 is newer and has fewer preparation resources, but it follows on from DP-700 skills. Consistent hands-on practice matters more than the exams' raw difficulty.

Can I become a Data Engineer without a degree?

Yes. Many Azure Data Engineers enter the field without a computer science degree. Microsoft certifications, practical experience, and demonstrable skills often count for more than formal education. A portfolio of data projects, open-source contributions, and relevant Azure certifications shows what you can do.

What's the difference between Data Engineer and Data Analyst?

Data Engineers build and maintain the infrastructure that Data Analysts use. Engineers work on data pipelines, storage architecture, and system performance; analysts draw insights from prepared data and build reports. Data Engineers typically use Azure Data Factory and Synapse Analytics, while Data Analysts mainly use Power BI and SQL. Both roles have strong career growth, and Data Engineers generally earn more because the work is more technically complex.

Should I specialise in real-time analytics or data warehousing?

Both have good career prospects. Real-time analytics skills (Stream Analytics, Event Hubs) are increasingly in demand for IoT and modern applications. Data warehousing (Synapse Analytics dedicated SQL pools) remains essential for enterprise reporting and business intelligence. Weigh your industry interests against the job market where you live. Many Azure Data Engineers build skills in both.
